Lib Dems triumph: John Leech tops ballot as he celebrates 25 years in public service

The Liberal Democrats are celebrating a triumphant result in Manchester as John Leech was re-elected, marking 25 years of public service to the city.

Despite Labour flooding the seat with hundreds of activists, including the council leader, Mayor Andy Burnham, several local MPs and surrounding councillors, John Leech has romped home to victory, increasing his majority to 892 and scooping 54% of the vote.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey MP, commended John Leech and congratulated him on "an unparalleled 25 years in public service."

John Leech, who celebrates 25 years in public service, said:

“Serving the people of Manchester is a commitment, honour and privilege that I take seriously. I am delighted to be re-elected, and I continue to be humbled by the trust and confidence placed in me.

"I will continue to work with all my heart and with as much energy as when I was first elected nearly 25 years ago today.

"I want to thank everyone who supported our campaign this year – it has been a mammoth team effort."

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey MP, personally commended John Leech:
